  • HANM201 READING IN THE WORKS OF MENCIUS I

    Covers the Works of Mencius and the Great Learning from The Four Books, with emphasis on the meanings that can be assigned to the verses. This course is designed to enable students to interpret and understand Confucianism, the central philosophy of classical Chinese culture. It will also provide students with insight into Korean traditional culture.


  • HANM242 READING IN THE WORKS OF MENCIUSⅡ

    This curriculum includes Confucian Analects, The Doctrine of The Mean from The Four Book. Other than that, it is the same as Intensive Readings of Mencius I.


  • HANM250 FIRST STEP TO CLASSICAL CHINESE

    Covers the basics of Chinese writing, such as grammar, phonemes, letters, as well as form and themes in classical Chinese poetry. The major classic works in classical Chinese will be examined. The course will also include references for students to conduct their own research.


  • HANM251 UNDERSTANDING OF CALIGRAPHY AND ACTUAL EXCERCISEⅠ

    The shapes of classical Chinese characters have gone through many phases such as KAPGOLMUN, KUMMUN, DAEJUN, SOJUN, YESEO even before that of HAESEO. In this course, students are expected to learn how to write the various shapes of Chinese characters, sometimes considered art, through studying theories and hands-on experience.


  • HANM252 UNDERSTANDING OF CALIGRAPHY AND ACTUAL EXCERCISEⅡ

    The shapes of classical Chinese characters have gone through many phases such as KAPGOLMUN, KUMMUN, DAEJUN, SOJUN, YESEO even before that of HAESEO. In this course, students are expected to learn how to write the various shapes of Chinese characters, sometimes considered art, through studying theories and hands-on experience.


  • HANM253 UNDERSTANDING OF STUDIES IN CHINESE CHARACTERS

    Students will learn how to interpret classical Chinese by understanding YUKSEO, the basic rules for writing Chinese characters from KAPGOLMUN to HAESEO. Also, the development of the letters, and other topics such as homonymy will be covered. Students will also be able to understand Chinese letters which originally came into being in the Korean peninsula.


  • HANM254 READINGS IN NOVELS IN CLASSICAL CHINESE

    Students are expected to read and understand some of the major texts in classical Chinese which will provide them with a deeper understanding of the history of Korean novels.


  • HANM255 CHARACTERS AND HISTORY IN SHI-JI

    Covers an interpretation of Shi-ji, the most prominent book on Chinese history, which demonstrates conventional ways of narrating historical events in Korean history.


  • HANM256 SAMGUK-YUSA AND ANCIENT CULTURES IN KOREA

    Through indepth readings from Samguk-Yusa, basic texts for understanding Korean origin myths, history, literature, folklore and religions, students are expected to understand the Korean way of life and thinking as well as the origins of Korean culture.


  • HANM257 CLASSICAL CHINESE LITERATURE AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

    Studies various cultural heritages in Korea and understands the history in relation with classical Chinese literature.


  • HANM258 HISTORY AND CULTURES IN EAST ASIA

    Studies the context of history and cultures in East Asia in terms of literary life of Classical Chinese.


  • HANM259 UNDERSTANDING OF KOREAN POETRY IN CLASSICAL CHINESE

    Students will understand historical current of the Korean Poetry, and watch the significance of a literary history through the main artists and the variation of a poetical style.


  • HANM260 IDEAS AND PHILOSOPHIES IN ANCIENT CHINA

    All Classes of Philosophers made variety attempts in an ideology. And their literary works is the cornerstone of our East Asia ideology. Students will read a number of their literary works and discuss the ideological meaning, with the exception of Confucianism and Taoism,


  • HANM261 HISTORY OF THE KOREAN NOVEL IN CHINESE CLASSICS

    Students will understand historical current of the Korean novel, and watch the significance of a literary history through the main artists and the variation of a novel style.


  • HANM262 MASTERPIECES OF KOREAN POETRY IN CLASSICAL CHINESE

    Covers Korean poems written by eminent Korean poets using different standards. Also, analysis, appreciation, and interpretation of poems in classical Chinese, as well as the history of Korean poetry.


  • HANM264 INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL CHINESE LITERATURE

    This class aims at cultivating basic knowledges required to study Classical Chinese literature.


  • HANM302 HISTORY OF KOREAN LITERATURE IN CLASSICAL CHINESE

    Covers the main characteristics and meanings of major authors, texts, and philosophies in Korean literature written in Chinese letters. Historical development theory will be covered which notes the period when Chinese letters and writing were first adapted up to Koryo and Joseon, to the period when present literature replaced it. The goal of this course is recognition of the individuality of the Korean classics in Chinese, compared to Chinese classics.


  • HANM351 UNDERSTANDING OF THEORY AND CRITICISM IN CLASSICAL CHINESE LITERATURE

    Students will read Chinese critiques that have influenced the history of East Asian literature to acquire a basic understanding of the core concepts and traditions of classical Chinese literary critique


  • HANM354 READING IN KOREAN PROSE IN CLASSICAL CHINESE

    Students will grasp the characteristics of Korean prose in classical Chinese by reading and analyzing works (except for novels and literary critiques).


  • HANM360 RESEARCH ON METHODS OF TEACHING CLASSICAL CHINESE

    Students will be able to understand the historical and theoretical background of classical Chinese teaching, research the end of the education and analyze overall textbooks for classical Chinese in middle and high schools.


  • HANM361 READING IN THE ANALECTS OF CONFUCIUS

    Covers excerpts from The Book of Poetry, The Book of History, and The Book of Rites from the Five Classics. Students will gain an understanding of the meanings of the verses, will improve their ability to interpret them, and will attain a deeper grasp of Taoism, the traditional philosophy the Orient.


  • HANM362 READING THE CHINESE HISTORY TONG-GAM

    Covers the digestive version of Chinese History Tong-Gam, or Tong-Gam-Jeol-Yo to improve the understanding of Chinese history as well as basic reading skills.


  • HANM363 RESEARCH ON TEACHING MATERIALS AND METHODS

    This subject offers practical skills of analyzing the features of teaching methods and classical Chinese teaching and the textbooks used in middle and high schools.


  • HANM364 HISTORY OF THE KOREAN CRITICS IN CHINESE CLASSICS

    Students will explore the history of Korean literary criticism in classical Chinese by discussing the historical significance of its major critics and changes in the development of the literary criticism.


  • HANM365 HISTORY OF THE KOREAN PROSE IN CHINESE CLASSICS

    Students will explore the history of Korean prose in classical Chinese by discussing the historical significance of its major writers and the changes in their literary styles.


  • HANM367 SEMINAR IN KOREAN CLASSICS IN CLASSICAL CHINESE

    Reviews material written on significant Korean scholars in the history of classical Chinese from the Three Kingdoms period onwards. This course will increase awareness of the lives of these scholars and their contributions to literature.

  • HANM470 THE ANALECTS OF CONFUCIUS AND LAO-ZI IN ENGLISH

    More than translating classics in East Asia, The Analects of Confucius and Lao-Zi, in Korean, this class fosters further understanding of them by reading translated editions in English.


  • HANM477 BUDDHIST IDEAS AND CULTURE

    Emphasis on the overall structure and Buddhist ideas in Korean literature written in classical Chinese. Also, theoretical examination of the leading factions in Buddhism.


  • HANM483 THE LOGIC AND ARGUMENTS OF CLASSICAL CHINESE

    Classical Chinese is a coherent and rational language. As it was continuously used for a long time, linguistic features and variance in each period have been accumulated in the language. Thereafter its logicality came to be questioned.
